Sofia Capital City of Bulgaria
Flights from Manchester and Gatwick Easy Jet from Jan-April £120 return
A small City by European standards ranked 15th in size with approximately 1.2million people (most of which are very beautiful girls and handsome guys for the lady members of the league).
With the airport only 6 miles to the city centre a 10-15 Lev Taxi ride and only 10 minutes it’s very easy on the pocket as £1 is currently 2.41 lev so in effect £4.20 ish of course agree the price first before getting in.
Hotels are cheap enough but my suggestion is apartments you can rent by the night, from as little as £33 a night for a one bedroom double bed with a pull out sofa bed in the lounge, a small kitchen with fridge etc and cable TV in a secure modern apartment block, the City centre being only 3 stops on the Metro which is modern and highly efficient with a train every 11 minutes, the charge per ride is 1 lev (42p) no matter how far you go.
BARS
Beer is of good quality but strong most beers are over 5% you can buy lighter beers but not from the pump and at an average cost of 2.90 lev (£1.22) for a large beer pronounced (goo-lama beera) a small beer is 1.90 lev (80p) if youre bringing the missus pronounced (malca beera).
The hard stuff whisky etc… be warned most bars, free pour, so tip the barman on the first drink and you will crawl out…lol , also on that point always insist on paying for each drink as you will never be able to read the tab when you decide to go and if there is waitress service and you’re in a round do not tip more than 2 lev 84p, but always tip as it is their main source of income basic salary will be only £70 a week.
They love cocktails in Sofia, and there are many great bar tenders mixing all your old favorites and at only 6.50 lev (£2.73) a go you will have the Dell Boys by the end of the night for sure.
Food
Again very very good value, if you take a restaurant chain called Olives City Centre home made burger chips and salad 8.90 lev £3.74 that’s waiter service in very nice surroundings go down the scale Mc Donald’s Big Mac meal 7.52 Lev (£3.16).
There is of course some high end restaurants but in the main they cater for Bulgarians and the prices reflect this with the average wage of 1,000 lev a month £420.
NIGHT LIFE
Lots of good bars and clubs, I have never witnessed any problems since I have been here 6 months now people are generally polite and respectful they also enjoy speaking English, yes they struggle with Geordie and ‘you Mackems have nee chance of being understood’.
Well that’s enough info for now if anyone is thinking of coming over email me Dave will give it to you and I will help you sort out apartments etc… or even just meet up for a drink or two, oh one last thing if you are coming over don’t change your money in the UK or airport you can get a good rate once you get here but again beware some advertised prices are bull shit Banks off fairly good rates as does Western Union.
